I just love the results of needle turn Applique, but it seems like there are less, and less people doing it.
I hate to ask but is this part of the quilting art dying out?
How many are still out there doing this amazing part of the quilting art?
How long before you had confidence in your skills?

I need an explaination of what it is. Thanks in advance to whoever can help me out.

I love the result of needle turn applique, but I'm am so slow at it. There is a border I want to do on a special quilt and I don't want to do machine applique and I keep putting it off because of the time I know it will take me to finish it.

I think in general, most people either don't have or don't want to spend the time it takes to do it the old fashioned way. Corners and indentations are much harder to do neatly and at least for me, everything can feel fumbly at first when I'm trying to keep the applique piece stead while I stitch. If it were a wall hanging, I'd machine applique too.

My hands just won't allow me to hold a needle for that long anymore, or I would love to do needle turned :D:D:D

I don't think this method is dying out, there are just so many other options that are quicker. I still see a LOT of hand turned applique work here and other places too :D:D:D

The applique pieces are sewn onto the quilt top or blocks by hand. Tiny stitches, turning under small amounts of the applique pieces as you go :D:D:D

I still do it, if the quilt I'm making is for someone outside the family. It makes the applique look nicer. I machine applique those that aren't so special.

It is relaxing to be able to sit back and do it while you watch TV. I've done alot of them for my civil war quilts and even though the teacher said we could use the machine I'd rather do it by hand. It's a great thing to stick in my purse and pull it out while waiting at the doctors or picking up kids. You are right; the look of it is so nice

I still do it, but I think it is dying out(like most hand work). I don't do it exclusively. I machine applique. And I both machine & hand quilt and hand & machine piece.

Some enjoy the process and the result. Others like to get to the result faster. I'm not too interested in books or pattterns that emphasize the speed of a project. Dont' care for great big blocks just to finish quicker. But for many busy women today, that's the way to go.

I hope that in the future these hand techniques don't die out.

I want to, I do all my piecing and quilting by hand, but I can't get a hang of the technique. I think I'm missing something, I cant seem to turn under a small enough section, so if I try it looks sloppy.

I have never done it, but i know at least 5 quilters who do it and do it beautifully.
