Anyone ever hand quilt using flannel as the backing.
I am new at quilting.

i would think it would work, if you did not have a batting. usually with hand quilting you want the quilt as thin and flexible as possible. Of course you can always do "big stitch" quilting.

And welcome to the quilting board!!

I have hand quilted a lot of baby quilts with flannel back and batting. Also have done some larger quilts that way. There has been little change in difficulty or stitch size on these. My stitches aren't too big, about 6 stitches per inch with flannel and 7 on most others.

welcome to the board.

Here are the results from a quick search. Tons of good info:

I do hand quilting and have used flannel on back and also on top with no problem. You can also use batting in it, but would use the thin batting.

Yes, just did this last year. Had cotton top; warm & natural batting and Moda flannel for the backing. Went very well. I actually think flannel is easier to quilt through that typical quilting cotton. Just remember to wash first as there is generally QUITE a bit of shrinkage with flannel.

Good luck!

It's been a while, but I'm with the others about shrinkage. Be sure you prewash in warm or hot water to get most of it out of the way unless it's for a wall hanging that won't be washed. =) Happy Stitching!

Flannel works well for handquilting because of it's softness. As a mostly handquilter I always am aware of the "feel" of fabric as I will be handling it a lot before it is a finished quilt. Do be sure to pre-shrink it.

I have hand quilted a flannel quilt with flannel on top and on back. I had to use a thicker thread to hand quilt- something like a jeans thread (I think that is what it was called). And had to take slightly longer stitches. Otherwise, regular hand quilting thread and small stitches get buried in the fabric. I used a poly batting. We use this quilt all winter long. My dh asked me to do this and I was very skeptical. But, it was really no problem.

Also, be sure to wash and completely dry the flannel. It shrinks considerably. Far more than regular fabric.
