Is it possible to put flannel and denim together in same quilt block? Or will the difference in weight of fabric make it wear poorly?

Has anyone out there attempted this?

It would depend on the weight of the denim (some is heavier than others) and the tightness of the the weave of the flannel (some is more threads per inch than others).

It is do-able, but if there is a huge difference in the weight of the two then I would not attempt it. I think eventually the denim would pull the threads of the flannel and the quilt will begin to fall apart.

Don't know the answer to your question, but I'm having flashbacks to the 50's and the flannel lined "dungarees" we used to wear in the winter to play in. :D

It will work just fine. you should try a rag quilt.

I did a rag quilt using flannel and denim for my middle son. HE loves it. It was all of his dad's old jeans on one side and warm cuddly flannel on the other. HE can use it as a Blanket on the sofa or throw it on the ground. It's his favorite

i've also made the rag quilt with flannel on one side, denim on the other. really nice and heavy. have enough stuff left to make another . . . some day!

My mother made some for her grandsons using denim and flannel and it worked. the boys used their quilts until there was not much left of them.

I've got one planned for using as a beach-quilt. Throw down the denim side and sit on the flannel side for evening bonfires.

I have a friend who made one alternating flannel blocks with denim blocks and it was awesome. It was, however, a gift for a college kid, not rambunctious little kids, so it won't get as rough as useage.

Thanks all. I thought about a rag quilt. It's for my teenage son and quilts are not 'cool'. I'm afraid he won't like the 'frills' on a rag quilt. But I know he'll like the flannel.

Any body out there have teenage sons they would like to 'fast-forward' by a few years?? :roll:

I know that a denim on one side and flannel on the other is nice and warm...

I am toying with an Idea using alternating strips or blocks of flannel and denim front and back.

Not sure if I want to do raggedy seams or not... I am concerned that these rag quilts will end up fraying too much.
