What is the absolute biggest size of block can you do?
Is that a stupid question *LOL* I am still rather new at this so is a 11x11 block too big? Also looking for a washington redskins embroidery in pes if anyone knows where to find one except the on on etsy please pm me thanks Rita

I've seen blocks as large as 20 inches. Really depends on the look you are going for and the pattern you are using.

I'm not much help on the embroidery question.

I've seen pictures of entire quilts that are 'one' block.

The size of my block depends on the content.
Lots of pieces in a block can support a larger block.
Too few and it doesn't look good.
For instance: a 4-patch would look best as a 4" finished, could go to 6" finished - wouldn't look good any larger
I rarely make a block larger that 9" finished.
My Burgoyne Surrounded (which has more pieces than I care to remember) is a 17" block.

blocks can be any size you want. 12.5" x 12.5" unfinished (12" finished) is a common size block but i too h ave seen patterns for blocks 20" or more.

the size block you make will really depend on what type quilt you are trying to design. browse the above website to help you with block ideas.

The older quilt blocks were often smaller. The first books I collected were full of 9 1/2" and 10 1/2" blocks. Now I find the standard block size tends to be 12 1/2" but you often see other sizes too. I have several patterns for 24" blocks that I often use for community quilts as 12 blocks will make a 72" X 96" top before borders. I also have a book of 48" blocks and I intend to make a 96" square top with four of these blocks. I find it really depends on what you are planning on doing with your quilt. I wouldn't want to spend the time doing tiny blocks if the quilt was going to be dragged off to camp and college and washed frequently but that is just my opinion. I'd save those tiny blocks for an heirloom keepsake.

Yes, I made a quilt that was about 60" square that was just one big block. I had used some larger prints and wanted to be able to show case the prints. It was a little challenging since I had to figure out the sizes of the pieces. But turned out very nice.

12" is a very popular size.
