I have made three scappy lap quilts for the local VA hospital. I decided to tie the last one for practice and to see if I liked it. I found on here that yarn is not the best for tying and how to run the thread. I used six strands of embroidery thread and a square knot and am almost done. What I haven't been able to find out is how short/long do you cut the "tails" after tying? Is there an average? Right now mine are about 1" - 1 1/2"
Also, my batting said it could be quilted up to 10". My ties are about 4 1/2" - 5" apart. I was thinking tied quilting needed to be a little closer, so do you think this is ok?

I usually trim mine to 1" or a bit shorter. But I guess it just depends on what you think looks best.

My tails are about 1". I also use embroidery floss. When I tie I try to pick where seams come together. Sort of hides the knot. It also depends on colors, sometimes I pick accent color on the back to bring the front & back together.

I haven't tried embroidery thread; will have to check it out.

Sounds like you did fine on the comforter.

I cut mine about 1" also. If you cut them too short they could possible come untied when washed.

I use perle cotton crochet thread and a double surgeons knot to tie mine. I tie every 4-6 inches depending on the design of the blocks. I trim the threads to about 3/4" for a baby quilt--a little longer for any other.

Thanks, it sounds like my "tails" are ok. I did hear about the surgeons knot, but couldn't figure it with what I found.
The distance between even sounds ok, beginners luck I guess.
Thanks again for the tips. I'll try to post pictures latter this week when they are done.
Thanks again, your the best ! !

I've used wool with a surgeons knot. When washed the wool shrinks and the knot becomes tighter.

I used Perle Cotton to tie my last quilt. Then - buried the ends... Nice and neat. If you want to leave the ties as part of the effect - about an inch to inch and a half is long enough.
