Hi I am new to quilting and have only just joined the forum. I am looking for advice on which grid rulers to buy. The slotted type look useful. But would like some comments from the experienced quilters out there.

Creative Grid rulers are best. In my humble opinion. I had the bright yellow lined ones and the lines are so think that I wasn't getting an accurate cut when I first started quilting. So those sit in a drawer.

The June Talor slotted rulers are great for cutting accurately. I would say that you need one large ruler for cutting length of folded babric, so a 24 by 6 and a ruler to square up blocks, like a 9.5 or 12.5 inch square, then one smaller ruler. That should get you going.

I have a slotted ruler. I got it to cut the fringe on fleece blankets, but I didn't like how it handled and ended up just using my regular ruler to cut the fringe. I don't think I've used it since.

I'm a big fan of Omnigrid rulers - the ones w/ the yellow lines. Often, once you get comfortable with a brand of rulers, you usually try to stay in the brand. That's what happened to me - my first ruler was an Omnigrid.

I like Creative Grid. Start with a 6-1/2" by 24-1/2"and a 12-1/2" square. This should be all you need at the beginning and you can add to as you get more familiar with what you want and need.

I happen to like the "Easy Rule" by Sharon Hultgren, for me they are easy to see on any color fabric. I also say start off with a 6 1/2 x 24 1/2" and a 12 1/2" square, but I also use my 6 1/2 x 6 1/2" the most. For ease of use try and make sure all your rulers are the same brand. They are all marked differently and having rulers that are consistent makes it easy to use any of them. I did just buy a Fiskers 8 1/2 x 8 1/2" ruler at Walmart, it isn't too bad either. You can buy other rulers as you grow with confidence and find that different sizes come in very handy. Good luck and remember to have fun!

my favorite ruler is my fluorescent 24x6.5... the laser cut lines are very accurate and easy to see. i wish i had gotten all of my rulers in that color. i don't use my slotted ruler very often... i find that my accuracy is a little off because the lines are hard to line up on square. that being said, when i need to cut many many small squares, the slotted is great to get it done more quickly. a large square up ruler is a necessity if you make larger quilts. for squaring up hst's, i use my 6x6, again wishing it was fluorescent instead of the yellow and black lines. hope that helps. and welcome to the board from MN

If possible, get one with degree markings

You need a large square up block ruler (12.5x12.5) and a long straight edge that will cover the width of your material for cutting strips, etc. (6x24"). Add the others as needed, but as stated by several, you might want to consider using the same brands, as it makes them easier to work with. Hope this helps.

Had the darndest time cutting until the June Tailor slotted ruler landed in my life. I LOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEE it! Can't live without it! In fact, I'm waiting for a coupon I can use, so I can have another one as backup! lol
