newbie to the forum and to quilting - would appreciate some advice
1 Attachment(s)
I've never made a quilt before. I've been working on this quilt top on and off for five years (I've attached a picture). Now I'm stuck.
It's about 22" square and I'm planning to use a black back and binding. I read here that maybe I should consider grey thread to quilt it with, but I can't decide HOW I should quilt it. My initial thought is that I should stitch in the colored parts following the lines of the black "leading". I would really appreciate any advice you all have. |
Welcome from Ontario, Canada. It's beautiful! I would think it would depend on how it is pieced. Did the coloured pieces go down onto a background fabric with a fusible and then fusible leading on top? If so then it could be quilted in any manner you wanted but stitching on the leading would be my choice. I think I'd use black thread on the black leading.
If the pieces are not fused down at all, I think I would top stitch the leading down with black thread first to secure all the pieces and then layer it to quilt. I hope you repost it when it's done, it's going to be awesome! |
Thank you for the compliment, it's been a labor of love for me and I'm glad to hear that someone else finds it appealing too!
The colored pieces are fused and their raw edges are supposed to be covered up by the the leading. The leading has two lines of stitching, one along each edge. Now that the top is done, I've found a couple spots where the leading doesn't cover the raw edges which is frustrating. |
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful. I have no ideas on quilting, but just wanted to let you know you're welcome here and how pretty your quilt is.

I think I would do as you suggested follow the edge of the leading - It might be too thick and heavy to quilt on the leading, depending on how you did the leading
