Scottish Quilt Block?
I'm writing my second novel, a Christian Romance. The lead female is a quilt barn painter. That's a person who paints a quilt pattern on sign board to display on a barn or house, for those who don't know.
The design needs to be a traditional quilt pattern that would have been used in Scotland in the early 1900's. In the plot the barn quilt pattern comes from an heirloom quilt they find stored in an old trunk. This quilt came from Scotland to the USA during WWII. Any ideas? |

I've found a Scottish Thistle pattern and a Celtic Knot pattern. Might work if I can't find a better idea. |
I think I've seen white on white ones and maybe the chintz cut outs appliqued to plain backgrounds?I know that the American Red Cross sent quilts to England during WW2. I saw a story about them in one of my quilt magazines and maybe you could tie those into your story too.

White on White would make a lovely quilt. It wouldn't look so great hanging on the side of a barn. A bit hard to see details in that. The appliques would be fine for a quilt barn block. Ideas on a pattern??
This quilt needs to come from Scotland with two children who are evacuated. Thanks for the tip on the Red Cross. I'll see if they have some pics on a website. |

As you probably know, most Scottish families can trace their family name to a particular Clan. Each Clan has it's own tartan. The Tartan has a particular pattern and colourway. Perhaps you can incorporate this somehow. There are also elements of a family crest that could be adapted.

Do a Google search for antique Scottish quilts. I just did and found several old quilts that might be what you need.

Nova Scotia Canada has a rich Scot history. You could also look into designs used in Nova Scotia. I have not done any research but I thought most antique quilts from that area were wholecloth and that patchwork quilt blocks were not very popular in that era.
