HST Question

I'm a newbie, so please be easy on me if this is a no brainer question....

I want to make a border on my quilt, and I want to make HST. The quilt is just 6" blocks, 5.5" finished. So in order to match that do I make 6" blocks and cut them in half? I tried this, I cut a 6" block, cut it in half corner to corner, sewed it back together and it's a little bit bigger than 5.5", (like 1/8"). I checked my seam, and it is right on 1/4". Should I be cutting 5.75" blocks? I have a book and it says if I want a 6" block than to start with a 6.5" block, so I am doing something wrong here... I know it's not that big of a difference on one block but by the time I get to the bottom it will be way noticeable and I am getting frustrated with wasting my precious "quilting time" that I don't have much to begin with anyway..
Thanks so much...

You need to add 7/8th inch to your finished size. Most of us add an inch then trim down and square up. Since you'll be making lots of HST you should consider using Rhonda's easy HST tute. Go to the tutorials section and look for it. Sorry I haven't figured out how to post a link with this Android.
