Incorrect instructions???
 

I've been quilting since 1980 and I'm addicted. My question - have you follow the pattern direction to the letter to find out they are wrong. This happened to me this week. Thank goodness the pieces were bigger and could be trimmed down. I think if I was publishing a pattern I would have every quilter I knew make it to check everything out. I realize it could have been a typo. Just wondering if this has happened to you? How you over came the problem. Thanks Pat

This happened to me last Christmas when I was making a pattern that was included in a quilt kit. It was a free pattern from the Robert Kaufman site. Fortunately, I realized the cutting instructions weren't right before I cut anything. I went to the Robert Kaufman site and pulled up the free pattern on my computer. There had been changes since the quilt kit had been assembled. I also went to the quilt designer's website and there was a version of the same pattern and that pattern actually turned out to have all the correct instructions.

This happened to me many years ago...the math just didn't match what the pattern said.It was more than just a little bit that needed to be eased in, and I thought that it just couldn't be right, so I added up all the measurements...and the pattern was wrong. It was a very popular designer. I wrote to her, and she agreed with me, that the math was wrong and how sorry she was, and sent me some free patterns and thanked me for letting her know.

I never trust free instructions from a fabric manufacturer. I was told by a designer that they throw them together and edit them later after the public finds the errors.

Thank you for sharing this information. I have never bought a kit, but I have read several times where the pattern is wrong. Sorry that it happened to you Memepat. Yet, so glad you were able to save it.

This happened to me as well. When I first started to learn, I found a pattern in a quilt book that had pictures of antique quilts and the authors had written patterns for them. Of course the one I picked to make was wrong. I ended up modifying the patten so that it would work and so that I wouldn't waste all the fabric I had cut.

My very first quilt, as simple as it was, had 2 sides that were almost an inch off and I just helped my mom with one and there were several things wrong. If I use a pattern, I now add them up before starting to cut fabric and usually put them into EQ7 to verify.

Now days the rush to publish is evident in the amount of errors. Its a shame that the first hing I do when I buy a pattern or book , is go to the internet to see if there have been any corrections. I bought a book of patterns a few years ago , there were 64 corrections. I was so disgusted I tried to return the book and get a later addition that had the mistakes fixed... and was unable ... never bought that designers books or patterns again.

I ran into that on my second quilt. Thank goodness the QB was here to help me confirm what I was thinking and work out the right measurements.

sometimes it pays to check the pattern makers online site for corrections. they seem to make them all the time.
