Metalic Thread HELP!!!
 

Is there a certain needle or foot or setting when using metalic thread? I've seen it used in things, but never how to use. I've ruined several items already. Would anyone help me with this problem? Thank you.

I've only worked with it once. Superior Thread's website recommends a Topstitch size 90/14 and reducing your upper tension to 1. Hope this helps.

i would suggest sewing on sample sandwiches first, and taking notes.

It also helps to use a vertical spoon pen. You want the threat to come off the spool with out twisting.

Most metallic thread is flat not round so it has to have a big needle eye, loose tension and a vertical unwind. You don't want the thread to stretch. I have had good results using Coats and Clark metallic thread.

Quality of the metallic thread is extremely important also. Many metallic threads are not really strong enough for the beating thread takes in a machine. Superior metallics are better quality; not sure about other brands.

You usually have to loosen upper tension, use a topstitch needle, and sew more slowly than usual with metallics.

There is a special needle made for metallic thread. The eye and scarf are designed to help keep the thread from shreading. They are easy to find at the big box fabric stores.

I use a thread stand and have it far from my machine as I can to let it relax before getting to the needle. Metallic or Topstitch needle go slow.

i used thread conditioner rubbed on the vertical thread holder guide +metalic big eyed needle--worked well

There are metallic needles. I just used metallic 3 days ago for the first time and used a metallic needle from schmetz with no problems.
