on point- how to determine triangle size?

When putting blocks on point are the triangles used just half the size of the blocks your using or is there a formula to figure out the size you need?

There is an amazing triangle ruler. It wasn't that much at JoAnn's with the coupon and I've used it for so many projects.

I have a "side set triangle ruler" - it is a trapezoid shape. Very useful.
