fabric storting
After reading all the post I decided to organise my room. Have a lot of 1/4 yds and 1/8 yds do you keep them or cut them into strips or how to you deal with those sizes Thank you
|
I don't cut them up at all. I did a bunch once and it seemed they were never the right size for what I need. I just put them on a comic board so they are easy to find.

What if you want a 20" square piece ... and you cut the FQ up?
You wouldn't have it when you needed it. Do what works for you ... if you want small pieces or strips, then cut away. If you might need larger pieces later, then leave it alone til needed. |
I wrap fabric that is 1 yard or more around boards that I have cut from foam core board and they go on my shelves. Anything smaller gets folded and placed in a 5 drawer Sterilite tower. I sort them in the drawers by theme: one drawer is all batiks and hand dyeds, another drawer is all holidays and another drawer is panels and then the rest of the drawers are arranged using ROY G. BIV (the colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. )

I only have those sizes when I have used up the rest of it. I mainly buy 4 or more yard pieces,

I have the fat quarters folded the same way the quilt stores do it and sorted by color mostly. I do have all the florals together, etc. They are stored in wire drawers...makes it easy to see what's there.

i only cut my bits left over into strips or squares----if you cut your fats it minimises your choices---

I have seen on here where some people cut up pieces in strips, squares, or other pieces. I don't understand why they cut large pieces into smaller ones without a specific purpose in mind. As soon as you cut a piece into 2 inch strips, then you will want it in 3 inch squares, or vice versa. I leave pieces uncut until I know how I want to use them.

I don't cut mine unless it is a really small scrap that would only work for a 2 or 2 1/2" square. I also cut narrow strips if the scrap is long and skinny. I just fold my FQs and eighth quarters into pieces about 6 x 6 inches and put the in one of those plastic roller cabinets with drawers. I sort batiks, holidays, seasonals and then sort the rest by color. It works for me, so far, but I'll need another cabinet soon.
