Fabric paint?
Has anyone ever used fabric paint on a quilt backing? I have been looking everywhere for the perfect fabric and I just cant find what Im looking for. I was wondering if fabric paint is an option? Maybe I could buy the base color and paint the design Im looking for onto the backing. Is fabric paint smooth or would the finish be rough and itchy? Just a thought but wonder if anyone has ever tried it...

I wouldn't use acrylic fabric paint on your backing. there are several paint "sticks" out there for fabric.

Maybe Ill look into those! Thank you :)

Or try dyeing your design for a more lasting result that doesn't just sit on top of the fibers.

I've painted fabric to make pillows but never a quilt. I used acrylic paint mixed with a special substance to make it adhere to fabric. I like the way it turned out. The only drawback is it makes the fabric somewhat stiff. So if you were painting heavily on the fabric it might be too stiff. I can't remember what the stuff you mix with the paint is called but it is sold with the paints in Joann's, Michaels, etc. It's just a clear liquid and inexpensive, like the acrylic paint itself.

It's pretty good. It does make the fabric stiffer, but softer than straight acrylic paint. I have used it often mixed with acrylic paint and a basic rubber stamp to print fabric to make reusable grocery bags. |
Way back when (70s/80s) I used the Artex and Tri-Chem fabric paints on numerous projects. Don't know what is available now that is similar.
I've also used crayons on fabric, coloring heavily and then pressing with waxed paper over the colored area to set the colors. |
When painting on clothes was popular back in the 80's I used textile paint and a air gun you can make designs or just one color it was the same air gun that people use to paint models with and most will work on canned air instead of buying a compresor
