rag quilt snipping advice please

Cut squares for two rag quilts last week. One will have batting and the other is denim/flannel only. Do I need to buy special rag quilt snippers? Thanks.

scissors with a spring help a lot. JoAnn's should carry them. Fiscars makes one I believe. regular scissors can of course be used but they are just a bit more tiring to your hand. have fun and take breaks if necessary.

I use Fiskars blunt tip spring-loaded scissors for rag quilts. Spring-loaded is much easier on my hands and the blunt tip allows me to cut very close to the seam without cutting the seam.

Heritage Spring Loaded Rag Quilting Snips are the best I've used. My hand does not get tired and I can start and finish a big rag snipping in one sitting. Fiskars spring loaded snips do not come close to being the quality and ease of use as these are. They are worth it if you only make one rag quilt.

Rag quilts involve a lot of cutting. I have the Fiskars rag quilt snips. They are spring-loaded and easy to use. I cannot imagine snipping a rag quilt without spring-loaded scissors.

Cheers, K

You can get the same pair of snippers at Lowe's for less. They are in the garden hand tool section.

I don't use scissors, I use a large seam ripper. I stick the ripper in just above the seam line and rip up. Works great and very easy on the hands.

The spring loaded snippers are likely a good idea if rag quilts will be a regular thing. If you are going to just make a couple and move on, I'd use my regular scissors. You can always cut a few and rest if it's hard on your hands.

Ditto on what Bella said. I bought a pair of Fiskars and a pair of Heritage @ the same time. The Heritage are wonderful! My hands thanked me for the purchase. :)

I rarely use regular scissors. My RA makes them extremely hard to hold and the bumps on my joints get caught in the finger loops. I always rotary cut fabric and use the Fiskars for anything else that needs to be cut or snipped. There are a lot of other uses for the spring-loaded scissors in addition to clipping for rag quilts. I've not used the Heritage, but I may look for them.
