Does anybody use the Simplicity binding machine to make binding?
 

I have used the machine twice to make binding. I am wondering if I am sewing it on correctly. I take it from the machine and pin it to the quilt and start sewing. I am wondering if I need to open it up and sew one side to the quilt and then fold it over and sew it again. Any comments would be appreciated.

Most bindings on quilts are double. so you don't open ..the binding is folded in half then the raw edges of binding sewn to the edge of the quilt then turned over and the folded edge sewn down.. there are lots of tuts. on bindings on utube..and on this board also.. I DON'T have a binding machine so I am not sure I understand what you are asking. but maybe this helps?.. hope so.

Is the binding you are making single-fold or double-fold? Most quilts are bound with single-fold binding, where the binding is simply folded once. This provides a double layer of fabric at the edge, where quilts get the most abuse. I believe the binding machine comes with double-fold attachments; you can buy the single-fold attachments separately. (I have seen them at Walmart.)

Normally you do sew binding twice, even if you are using double-fold binding. It makes for more accurate stitching. A lot of quilters machine sew the binding to the front, then hand sew the binding on the back (for single-fold).

I use single-fold binding but I find I get better results if I do *not* iron the binding in half first, so I do not have a need for the Simplicity machine.

What you are calling double fold is actually called French Fold. Double fold binding is only a single layer of fabric. It has both raw edges folded to the center before it's applied. Single fold only has one raw edge folded to the center.

I use the binding machine with the biggest binding tip. I use a 2 1/4" wide fabric strip. It works great. I use it double fold. I sew the raw edges on the quilt and then turn and hand sew the folded edge to the quilt. I have bin full of different color and print bindings because it's so easy to make and my grand loves to operate the machine.

I use mine alot, I also use the large tip.
