Magazines...print or digital
 

As a VERY new quilter, which type of magazine is best for simple, quick projects that teach you as you go along?

Then as you get more experience, which magazine would be the next step up? A more challenging one?

And finally, which publication would be designed for all you experts out there?

any suggestions?

I like the Better Homes & Gardens American Quilting. I have a few other subscriptions and some of them come also in digital format, but I want to see a printed page where the colors are as was intended rather than my monitor settings.

Myself, I prefer print. I can leave it open and follow the instructions. If digital I would have to print it.

All are good to look at for ideas and tips. I do both digital and print and have followed patterns from both. If you have to do a telates it is difficult to size correctly if you aren't a computer wizz. I buy English, American and Australia an New Zealand and France . But not every month when I see them and they have a project or something I like. Just a tip from me never let a friend look and borrow until after you hav read it, lost mine for 12 months .
Digital opens a wider area possible.

I have MANY subscriptions both print and digital.

However for the majority of my magazines I am slowly turning
them into the digital versions, but there are a couple that I just
WANT to keep as print (and still get the digital).

The mags I WANT to keep getting in print versions are mainly so I
can have something in my hands to look at and read when I have
appointments and such.

Until the time comes that I can get a tablet or iPad of my own.

McCall's Quick Quilts
Quilt-it...Today
Sew-it...Today
Fons & Porter Easy Quilts

I get the print magazines...I have a Nook, but don't think I would enjoy using it for looking at magazines.

I get Better Homes and Gardens quilt magazine, and Primitive Quilts and Projects by subscription. Any other magazines I only buy on the newsstand when the magazine has at least 3 projects that I LOVE...otherwise, I can live without it.

I get mostly print magazines. I've scanned/downloaded some patterns I really like. But I have an awful time finding the pattern I want whether it is paper or digital. I need a better filing system for both paper and digital.

Whether it's easier to use paper or digital patterns depends partially on where your computer is located relative to the sewing machine and cutting/prep area. Any templates would have to be printed out.

I like the textural feel of print magazines. While I have had subscriptions in the past I haven't for years. It seemed like there might be maybe one quilt I wanted in a magazine, so why pay for a year's worth.

I do buy individual magazines that I like. I go to Barnes and Noble and get myself a 'fancy coffee' and read through the various magazines there. Friends and I share our magazines.

When I find something I really want to keep, I scan it into my computer in order to keep the paper clutter down.

I much prefer books to magazines for learning new techniques.

My favorites are Fons and Porter - they give a wide range of projects from easy to challenging, McCalls Quilting - for the same reason, and American Quilter - that one gives a lot of different techniques. I keep my magazines as I never know what direction I going to take in my next quilt and I go back and find fun things to work on in previous issues.
