Denim Quilt?
 

I have always wanted to make a denim quilt. Simple pattern probably not much in the way of fill because it will already be heavy and bulky because it's denim. I want it for my bed because I have dogs and it should hold up well and be very washable. You never see denim quilts. Is this possible? Any ideas or do's and don'ts?

Denim quilts are fine! A nine patch,fairly large squares works. Some folks tie them as they are pretty bulky to quilt the sandwich. Backing with corduroy or flannel should hold up to you canine buddies.

As they say, anything is possible. Keep it simple. I should think it would be very pretty, maybe paired with shirting checks or something for brightness.

I had a friend just bring me her started denim project she was making for her husband. Its just a 5" x 5" solid block of denim...she cut them from all different colors of denim jeans then sewed them in random order and also added in some flannel blocks...its really heavy and will be nice and warm for him :) I say go for it! :) best of luck.

Corduroy works well with denim also. :)

I have made a few denim quilts. The are heavy. I made the mistake of using a thicker batting on the first and ended up only being able to tie the quilt is was so thick. They look great when you use lots of different variations of faded in the quilt. Tip - Use bigger pieces as the seam allowances of small pieces really adds to the weight. I used a 1/2 inch seam allowance as the weave/raveling can be an issue.

I did a sampler quilt in denim, 9" blocks. The denim was not easy to work with, but the quilt survived a hurricane that destroyed virtually everything in the house. It is very heavy and warm.

I have made three, and used flannel as backing. The first one has no batting. It is warm, but you can feel the seams. The other two have a thin batting, and all are tied.
The nice part of making denim quilts, is the fabric is free. I did find a little problem. A lot of the jeans have stretch in them. I was selective, and didn't use them. I am saving jeans for my next project.
