Favorite blocks / patterns for hand piecing? (other than hexies)
 

Curious as to what the hand piecers on the board like to work on, other than EPP hexagons.

I'm thinking of doing another hand piecing project after I finish a current one. I'd want something fairly easy to keep track of, and easy to piece without doing a huge lot of marking. I'm finding that I really enjoy having a project to take outside the sewing room. I'm not an expert quilter but I can hand-stitch a fairly nice seam.

It's not piecing but I want to do a small wholecloth quilt. I have a crib size I got a looong time ago at Road to CA quilt show. I love the look.

I'll be watching this thread. As I've recently gotten "hooked" on handwork.

Dresden plate, Any Hawaiian block. Right now I'm doing strip piecing by hand on a muslin foundation.

Actually, any block that you like can be hand pieced. I am hooked on hexagons, but have also thought to do something different. I'm thinking of doing something with curved seams. I'm ok with doing curves on the machine, but need something to take out of the sewing room also. The Applecore comes to mind, or drunkered path.

My favorite of the ones I've hand pieced is the green Around the World that I did using 2-1/2" squares. It was very easy to keep track of. I put my cut squares in sandwich bags and hung them on a metal ring. The assembly works just like the GFG. You add blocks around the four sides of the center square, then proceed in stairsteps for each round. Once it is as wide as you want it, you just add at the ends and finally at the corners only till you add the final single square at each corner. I'm still thinking on whether I want to add a border to mine.

You might consider Dear Jane, or Farmers Wife.

I like to hand piece blocks that would be harder for me to piece by machine. In my case, that includes most blocks. I've done a lone star, a couple of mariners compass style quilts, and a New York Beauty by hand. The marking and cutting wasn't overwhelming because I did it one block at a time.

Oh, and don't forget applique - the only way I'll do that is by hand.

My project to go is Cathedral Windows. I have been working on one for 5-6 years. It is something that has no pressure and I have used scraps for the windows, so it will be scrappy. I don't know if it will ever be finished. Maybe it will be one of those projects someone "finds" at a yard sale--Hopefully a long time into the future. lol
