Sometimes it pays to look beyond the ad picture.

I saw an ad for this "Old Singer handcrank" in the Sacramento area of Craigslist.

The ad showed this...

Cathy was kind enough to pick it up for me and drop it off on her way down here.
It seems that the delivery was the hard part.... She know I had only seen the photo above and was tempted to pull a switchero and deliver something else hehe)

What I received was this..

This has got the be the most unusual shuttle I have ever seen. Notice the curved top where it slides on the race. And it looks almost new.

This date is pointing towards a very late 1800's date. It might even be in my Timeframe! woo hoo!

Talk about a short throw and tight arc for the shuttle to move in
This machine is usually called a transverse machine, but I think this machine is "sorta" like a Transverse but more like a rotated Vibrating Shuttle

That machine is more a work of art than a sewing machine. It's gorgeous. I'll bet is sews great too.

Hello Steve - What a fascinating machine! It's like a hybrid of a transverse shuttle and a vibrating shuttle. Also the balance wheel isn't attached to a separate crank so you only get one turn of the wheel for one turn of the handle instead of the three that you would get with the crank - you will really feel the difference when you start sewing with it. The bobbin winder might well turn out as being the most efficient you have ever used. It is very similar to the winder on my Serata treadle, which winds a far tighter and more even bobbin than any Singer.

German machines are so beautiful and intriguing. Congratulations on a wonderful find!

Actually because of the internal gearing inside the handwheel it does stitch three stitches for every turn of the hand crank... I was wondering about the 3:1 thing myself until i tried it.

Thanks, it actually surprised me how nice it was once cleaned up.

It came with 2 packages of 12x1 and 4 packages of 13x1 needles. They both work because this unit does not have a stop for the needle. you have to manually set the needle height.

I gave a few packages of the extra needles to Cathy for her collection.

Steve and I have traded/ swapped quite a bit. So much more fun for than paying.
