FMQ on a Singer 600 series- Who's done it?

I recently aquired my grandma'sb 600e that is still in great condition. I cleaned and oiled all the internal parts and tested out straight stiching. Its fast but still works great! I'm still getting used to it and wanted to know what settings work best for FMQ. In the manual it suggests any kind of FM stitching be done without a foot, I'm nervous to try!

Use a foot. There are many darning feet available on the net. If you're a newbie it's very important to take precautions. Darning in the past was without a foot and using a hoop to keep your project tight. Quilting is not done this way by machine, and you wouldn't be happy with the end result.

That's the direction I was leaning, but just wanted some input. Thanks!
