Thin batting recommendations please
 

I am doing a LARGE king sized quilt for my sister who lives in California. I want to use a thin batting so it's not
too warm for her to actually use. I normally use Warm and Natural but that is heavier than I would like. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks for any help.

I use light weight polyester batting that I buy when JoAnn's has a half price sale.

If price is not an issue, you could go with a silk batt. I've not worked with them, only fondled them and they do feel wonderful. Quilter's Dream cotton has a very nice drape to it. Again, not used it personally but my friend does. Not sure if it would be any less warm than W&N - which is what I normally use as well. Those are the only ones I have any experience with. Good luck.

It also depends on what part of California she lives in. I'd suggest either a flannel for the batting or a sheet. Either one is excellent for a lightweight quilt, and will hold up extremely well for the inside of a quilt, if you don't want to use batting because of weight and warmth issues.

Quilter's Dream is a very nice thin 100% cotton batting. Considerably lighter than Warm & Natural.

If you don't mind poly batt, Thermore is a good, very light, with a bit of loft so that quilting stands out. I have one on my bed now for summer. It's the one in my avatar.

I'd stay away from anything with polyester since it doesn't breath. I would use a thin Quilters Dream cotton.

We live in Hot, Hot Texas. I made my daughter the quilt in my icon with Hobbs wool batting. I keep my house @75 degrees and she was using it at night. Hope this helps.

If you want loft, Hobbs PolyDown remains very lightweight and soft after quilting. If you want thinness, I would use Quilter's Dream request weight cotton.

Will they actually use the quilt as a cover at night? If they are going to fold down the quilt at the foot of the bed, I would probably go with the Hobbs PolyDown.

Fairfield 80/20 batt is lightweight but adds a lot of body. It is becoming my favorite for most of the quilts I make. I didn't know Fairfield made 80/20 until I ran out of batting and went to Walmart to buy Warm and Natural. The store was out! No quilt shop in my area. I went to the prepackaged batting and found the 80/20. Already cut to size I need too.

I usually use Hobbs batting and it's excellent.
