New Machine advice

My 40 year old Viking finally bit the dust. I am needing (wanting) a machine that would be used for piecing. I already have a Bernina so really don't need anything elaborate. Something reasonably priced but a good "workhorse". What would you suggest?

try a vintage machine--1 that can be serviced by yourself and used for FMQ like a 15-91. They are reasonably priced and are found all over.

Look into the Viking HQ100. I use it all the time and love it. Around $400.

What is your price range? For piecing, I would want a machine that has the needle down option. Also, is there a reason why you do not want to use your Bernina for piecing?

For piecing, I'd definitely get something with upper feed dogs. You can find an older Pfaff for less than $500 usually. If you want a newer, pricier machine there are others with both top and bottom feed dogs, like Babylock.

Thanks for the replies. Prism99...no reason for not piecing with my Bernina ..usually have it set up to do the walking foot or fmq. I guess I'm spoiled ..one to piece and one to do the finishing work. Love my Berninia...
NVB---will have to look into this one. Thanks...

I am a Pfaff lover because of the IDT. If you have any arthritis in your hands I would strongly encourage you to look at them.

Otherwise, have fun looking and playing with the various brands and models.

I am also a Pfaff lover because of the IDT Foot. I bought the Pfaff Ambition for piecing and LOVE it.

If you loved your vintage Viking like I love mine, there are some techs who have spare parts and can still fix them. After an rebuild and new fixed cam, my 6020 is in great shape. This was after another shop said it was unfixable. The Yahoo group "vikingsewingmachinespre1980" has a list of reliable Viking techs who work on the old machines. You might have to ship it.

I'm not sure what your price range is. That's a very important thing. If you are just looking for piecing and want something new (I am not a fan of vintage machines. I like my newer stuff like thread cutters and needle threaders not to mention a warranty).
A bit over a year ago I bought a Juki 2000 which I love. Others get the Brother 1500 and there's a Janome also with a 9" span that does straight stitch only. It all depends on your budget but I'd go for a straight stitch only machine. I love mine.
