Paper Piecing Project Started!!
 

On my "to do" project list is to do something new this year, and I started a large paper piecing project Antique Kaleidoscope from Fons and Porter (free pattern). It came as a teaser in a flyer for their magazine purchase, and said " Illustrated Step by step instructions. I printed it out, and sat down to read - well I will let you decide on the instructions

I am glad I did not purchase a subscription if this is a sample of their instructions - . But I loved the picture. I printed out a set of 48 (4 per page), just to see if I would like it.

What a challenge, I watched u tube videos, and then I tackled the first set. Thank goodness I took a class on paper piecing, (tiny tiny pieces and I hated it) and after multiple visits with my seam ripper I actually completed 48 sets.

I think I am addicted. I love doing them! I have to over 400 sets, and I am using my leftover civil war scraps - this will be my first scrappy quilt using all leftovers, and it is so much fun. I would be quilting right now instead of being on QB, but I have to print out more pattern pieces and need a black cartridge for my printer. I have put 4 per page, and am using cheap printer paper (paper piecing paper jammed in the printer). No problem with sewing with this paper on my machine. Is there anything wrong with using printer paper? I read that my cutting wheel will dull quicker, do I have to change my sewing machine needle frequently?
Does anyone ever do hand piecing with paper piecing?

What a beautiful quilt!! How did you get the patter pieces - or did you run 400 of that sheet?

This pattern would be a lot easier to do with a triangle ruler! You are going to be ripping out paper through eternity plus you will be so bored! I am a PP addict but stick to Carol Doak patterns and instructions. I cant imagine hand piecing something like this. I also would use a paper made for PP. Easier to correct mistakes with it and a lot easier to take out.

I printed out 4 copies of the pattern, and taped 4 to one sheet. I marked dark and light in black marker to help me.

I am using scraps, so the paper piecing is preventing alot of "issues with stretch on bias". I think doing them in sets of 48 between other quilting will keep me interested. I feel so thrifty using my scraps.

Congratulations. I want to learn paper piecing but not sure I could start with something that big. Can't wait to see it when you have it done.

I am pretty new to quilting...paper piecing scares me. I have to work up to that, I think. I'm sure there are great benefits, but it need to watch a video or something on it first before I'm ready to dive in! LOL

Anxious to see a picture or two of what sounds like a real beauty. I love PP too.

Thanks for a great PP story. Loved when you declared you love it! Please show us your project. I to saw that pattern in the ad I received from their magazine. Immediately copied it into my EQ for future. Yes yet another on my bucket list.
