Colored Chalk
 

I use white chalk for my marking, but just now I am running low. It may hold out till payday, but I was just wondering, if anyone has used the colored ones. I am planning to wash this quilt that I am doing right now. Will it come out just as easily as the plain white?

I have used colored chalk and found it difficult to brush off the fabric. I have not tried to wash the fabric though.

When I stray from "fabric" marking products I do a test strip and use various colors and styles of non fabric markers. It is always a good idea to do a test piece on the fabrics in each project. Different fabrics and markers respond differently. I am currently using Bohn ceramic pencil and love it.

I bought both white and blue chalk when I first got my longarm, then I heard horror stories from others about not being able to get the blue out, so I've never used the blue. One of my longarm teachers said she does use the blue, but she cuts it with white to make it less 'potent'. Keep in mind that you can have different 'reactions' on different fabrics, so I would ALWAYS test it on a scrap of the actual fabrics before I used it on a quilt.

I've used the colored chalk markers found in the quilting notions aisle and not had a problem with them washing out regardless of color. I have evolved to using the mechanical-style colored lead pencils though. Think Bohin. I use a white for dark colors and just use a regular #2 mechanical pencil for light colors. Haven't had an issue with either of those washing out either.

I have heard that yellow chalk doesn't always come out. As others have said, test on your fabrics before using.

i use lots of colors of chalk as needed- but i always test before using it- every project/fabric is different- sometimes it comes right out, sometimes it's more difficult- remember to not iron over the marks (set the color) i generally brush off as much as i can or use an art eraser which generally works really well- if it's a bit more (difficult) i use a wet washcloth- or i spray the areas with stain remover before the quilt goes into the wash. (i always launder every quilt i make as soon as the binding is done- so most often that is when my marks disappear)

Thanks for the comments. Being a bit of a chicken, I guess I will stick with the white. Jim is getting some on the way home. I have a box of the colored. Maybe I will give it to the kids at church.

I would test it before I used it, could save you a lot of heart ache.
