Washing fabric from Connecting Threads
 

Newbie question. I just purchased my first kit and also some fabric from Connecting Threads. Should I wash this material before I cut it for my quilt? I do wash all my fabric that I purchase from LQS, Joann's and other stores too.

I use a lot of kits and never prewash the fabrics first. After assembling and quilting, then I wash the quilt with color catchers. I personally haven't experienced any problems doing it this way. Welcome, and happy quilting!

But if the fabric is in small pieces, I wouldn't wash it first. Two reasons, 1 it could become a tangled mess, 2 it could shrink and you won't have enough to make the quilt.

I don't prewash, but if I did I still wouldn't prewash kit fabric. If they cut it not anticipating you'll wash it you may find yourself short.

I am a fan of CT fabrics! I suggest washing all fabrics before using them, if possible!

Well, I *am* a Connecting Threads fabric fan but I "usually" do not wash fabric from any manufacturer (Moda/Benartex/TimelessTreasures/etc.etc.) before the quilt is made. I then wash with color catchers.

That quilt has been well handled, fallen to the floor, sat in my lap while I snacked, carried to guild meetings while being quilted or bound, marked on for quilting....it's dirty, I don't want it against my face or on the bed afterwards!

I love Connecting Thread's fabric. I wouldn't pre-wash kit fabric, charms, nor fat quarters. If you are short on any fabric in your kit, contact CT customer service. They are great in taking good care of their customers.

CT fabric is good quality fabric. I have not had any bleed, not even the deep colored batiks. I have a sampler of about every line they sell. The older fabrics did have some issues but the fabric from the last few years have been fine. I don't prewash it.

You will get answers all over the map whenever you ask about pre-washing. I pre-wash everything, unless it's already cut into the size that it needs to be for piecing (e.g. jelly rolls). If the kit is in large pieces, I would pre-wash it. It's not only because of bleeding, but also to get the manufacturing chemicals off the fabric. I just prefer working with fabric that I know has already shrunk and is as clean as possible.

There are some of us that almost feel that not washing fabric ( if washable) before cutting it is a mortal sin.

There are others that feel as strongly that washing fabric before cutting it is a foolish waste of time and other resources.

I do not trust ANY new cotton from any source to be color fast and to not shrink.
