Jelly Roll?

What do you make from a jelly roll!

I am new to quilting but have been doing a lot of reading and actually bought my first jelly roll. The fabrics are wonderful and it is nice that the 2 1/2 fabric strips are already cut out for me. I am planning on making a baby quilt with my jelly roll. Now I just need to decide on the placement of my fabrics.

So Mateo- you will just sew the strips together? Maybe a log cabin quilt would be good to make from a jelly roll. The ones I saw today had zig zag edges

there are many, many books and patterns on the market specifically for jelly rolls - or 2 1/2" strips- just do a google search- and most any strip piecing patterns work as well- there are always log-cabins & pineapple blocks- tons of options.

Go to Moda Bake Shop or Missouri Star quilting tutorials. You'll find lots of ideas there.

I agree with Mary Quilting and quiltsRfun. I don't like most jelly rolls as they don't always have enough contrast in colors, design, and scale of design. It is cheaper, as the markup on them are very high, and easier to cut my own from fabric I choose.

I had made the quilt (free Pattern) Le Belle Fleur. I bought a kit ( 2 Jelly rolls ) which ended up to being not wide enough for a Queen size quilt. So I bought 3 rolls this time and I can make it longer as well as wide enough for our queen size bed. Love the looks on how it came out. Also you can do the 45 min strip quilt. Jenny Doan at Missouri Star Quilting has a video.

I think i love jelly rolls, haven't had enough to really know yet.

So far i made a jelly roll race and an irish chain. For the jelly roll race i had bright batiks so i added some black batiks just for contrast and breaking things up a little bit. For the irish chain i had to add a dark solid and a light background to make it work. The jelly roll for the irish chain was very bland even though the fabrics were all busy.

I think i am going to make my own jelly rolls out of scraps to have on hand for those times when i need to quick projects.

A jelly roll will certainly make things go faster and you won't have to use much brain power. I love that you don't have to always think so hard so you can make something very quick and have instant satisfaction in between larger or more complicated projects.

Thank you everyone for the information. I never thought of using Penterest but it was great nor did I think of the internet in general. It seems to make cutting stuff out a lot easier.all of the ideas gave me a clearer picture! I am going to buy me some Kelley rolls!
