How big do you want your finished quilt to be? Do you only want it to cover the top and then add borders? Or do you want the pinwheels to cover the entire quilt from edge to edge with no borders?

I would probably do 99 blocks - 9 wide x 11 long. Here's my logic: A standard queen-size mattress is 60" x 80", so 6 x 8 squares will just cover the top. You also need to have it drape over at the sides and feet. I have a thick mattress, so adding one square on each side wouldn't be quite enough; I would add 3 to the width (9 squares across = 90"), and 3 to the length (11 squares = 110") to allow for drape and a pillow tuck at the top. If you don't fold the quilt around the pillows, then 90 blocks (9 wide x 10 long) is probably enough. I hate seeing a little bit of mattress/sheet peeking out between the quilt and the bedskirt, so I always aim to make quilt tops a couple inches larger than I think I need. That way, shrinkage due to close quilting, batting shrinkage etc. still leaves me with a good-sized quilt. I hope this helps!

When you sew your squares together and add your border before cutting, you are correct, you are going to lose a lot. Your finished squares you are cutting will end up 7 1/2" (finished size). I would say to do 13 x 13 and then add your borders before you cut. You will end up with a quilt that is roughly 105" square. Be sure you add the border before you start cutting, otherwise you won't end up with pinwheels on the edges.

So to do this size one has to lay all those squares out first, then cut and sew the twisters? Or am I thinking wrong here?

I have the large Twister Ruler and using a 36 10" (6 x 6) squares will make a 52" x 52" quilt before borders. The instructions state Your finished quilt without borders will be about 1/3 less then the size you start with.

Geri B, Yes!! you have to lay all the blocks out sew them all together and then cut them with the twister ruler and sew them back together lol......it is a lot of work. I am working on a qeen size ......and after I sewed my blocks together the first time, it layed in the quilt room for a while because I didn't have the heart to cut it all back apart, lol......finally working on that part now! :)
