Math question

If a quilt top measures 60X70", how do I estimate how many yards of fabric are in the top?

I just want a ballpark figure for my own use. Is there a formula for doing it?

Take 60 divide by 36 1.66 yards
take 70 divide by 36 1.94 yards

1.94 times 1.66 equals 3.23 yards finished not the amount of fabrics used because it does not take seam allowance into account.

I hope this helps

Thanks Billi. You're a life saver.
That's what I needed to know. I'll know what to do the next time.

(60*70)/(36*width of fabric) - let's use 42 inches for the wof measurement

(Length times width of the top) divideed by (36 times width of fabric )

(60*70)/(36*42)

4200/1512

2.779 yards

The number 3.23 is number of SQUARE yards in the quilt.

Actually, it is hard to give an accurate answer to the original question - if the person is asking "how many yards of fabric do I need to make a quilt a certain size?"

Some variables:

How wide is the fabric
If washed, how much shrinkage occurs
How many pieces are in the design
How much waste is there in cutting

I don't usually bother anymore with the math. I buy backing material 104" to 108" and for 60 x 70 I would buy two yards. I would have plenty for the quilt with some left over for appliques, or a smaller Drag Around Quilt. Backing is usually 8.50 to 12.00. ( unless you go bonkers on the high price backing ) I saw some the other day, on line, that was 125.00 per yard. Yikes ! not me !
