Is this a good deal?

Today there is an ad for Singer heavy duty school model sew & serge machines for $129.00. The ad says they are brand new 2014 school models. I attached the ad. I have a Singer One sewing machine now and a separate serger that I've had for 15-20 years. Now I only use it to serge my yardage before I prewash. I would appreciate any thoughts or comments on this. The sale isn't until June 23rd. Thanks.

I wouldn't buy one, but that's just me. What purpose do you want to use it for that you don't already have a machine?
|
I have gone to see these when I saw them advertised. IMHO it is just a way to draw you in, so they can sell you more expensive and fancy machines. The advertised machine is never sewn on, when I asked for a demonstration of the school model, the demonstrator refused, saying he was only going to show the fancy machine. IMHO it is a rip off.

I have to laugh at the "school model". Apparently the advertisers have not caught on to the fact that schools no longer offer Home Ec or any other kind of sewing class.
|
I sewed on one of these for years, it was all I could afford at the time. I agree, they are probably not "school" machines but they are heavy duty. I quilted full size quilts on mine. Just try it out and if all you want/'need is a basic machine this one worked well for me.

I went to one of those demonstrations. If it were me I would take that $$ and get a basic Brother at Walmart or Costco if you are a member there. Save your receipt in case of a problem.

Thank you for your input. Very helpful advice.

I use to own a Singer in the 70s and was very happy with it but I wouldn't invest in a Singer now a days. Just my opinion.

If they won't let you try it, I wouldn't buy it. I bought my newer machine (12-15 yrs old) at the LQS and they let me try it. They also let me try others. The LQS (good ones) want you to be happy with it before you go out the door. And like Peckish stated, they no longer teach Home Ec in some areas. I would move on! Just saying!

I would save up for a better quality machine.
