Minky-Crinkle Top
 

I am making a baby blanket and it is going to be backed with minky. I am using a cotton batting.

If I prewash the quilt top (because of the difference in shrinkage) will I still get a crinkle top?

I am tempted to not prewash to make sure that it is crinkly but am afraid it will get distorted if the top shrinks too much and the back doesnt shrink at all.

Have you ever made a quilt backed with minky and not pre washed?

I will be curious to know the answer also. I have Minky just sitting in my stash because I'm not sure how to use it.

I have used minky for the backing on 2 small lap quilts but I did not use batting and I did prewash the tops.

I am practicing my FMQ so I really need the quilt to be crinkly!

Minky does not shrink because it is polyester, not cotton. The cotton batting is what will shrink some and the top if you did not prewash the fabrics.

I used Minky once and it was terrible with all the stretchy of the fabric quilting it on a DSM. Never will touch that fabric again.

I use minky all the time for quilt backs..probably at least 25. I never prewash, always use lightweight cotton batting, because I don't feel that it has a good weight without batting, my usual is warm and white or natural. I ALWAYS use spray basting and my phaff IDT..I am sure a walking trip will work the same though. and it always nice and crinkly.

I don't prewash my fabrics, and even though I complain every time I have to use Minky, I LOVE the final results. I wash after the quilt is complete because I use Elmer's glue, and the quilt comes out nice and crinkly, plus very cozy with the Minky!

I suggest not pre washing and spray baste it so you don't get puckers and shifting/stretching. I am getting ready to make a few baby blankets with mink and car seat blankets cuz I an due in October. And I have two friends who are due after me. By a couple months.

When you say "if I prewash the quilt top" I hope you mean if you prewash the fabrics before you put them in the top. Always avoid washing a quilt top, because you will wind up with a mess on the back. All the unprotected seam allowances will ravel, and the whole top will have to be carefully pressed again. In some emergencies people do wash a top by hand, but it's still not recommended.

If you use cotton batting, the cotton batting (as long as you don't pre-shrink it) will create the crinkled look even if you have prewashed the cotton fabrics in the top.
