Jelly roll Wash or not to wash?
I am about to use a jelly roll for the first time. Normally I would wash, dry and press my fabric. But, I watched an episode on Fons & Porter. The lady's were saying to just open, unroll and sew. Should I do this or will the colors bleed out? I bought the Moda jelly roll if that matters. I am combining all Moda jelly rolls, one of solids, one of print of some regular (non moda fabric I need o cut into strips.
I ill try to post pictures. Tank you or all advice and opinions. |
I think the consensus is not to wash pre cuts to avoid shrinkage and fraying that will leave you with odd sizes. If you feel you really need to for bleeding, I would just gently soak them in warm water in the sink and handle as little as possible--lay flat to dry.

I washed a jelly roll and dried it in the dryer. First I folded a bunch in half and used a long stitch and sewed them together. I washed them in a net bag. It was still a big mess and I will never do it again!

Thank you, i neer thought about shrinking and fraying. I think i will not wash and just sew together thank you for the advice.

I trust Moda not to bleed...some day that might bite me in the butt but so far I've had good luck.
I don't pre-wash my pre-cuts...I just throw in a few color catchers with the finished quilt "just in case". So far that has worked for me. I don't buy "no-name" precuts, though; only from manufacturers where I have used their yardage without having bleeding problems in the past. (My "trusted" list for precuts is short: Kona, Moda, Connecting Threads, and Hoffman) |
I don't wash them. I put one or two color catchers in the wash the first time.

I wouldn't wash pre-cuts either. If you are concerned about all or some of the fabs, you could soak them in hot, soapy water in, say, a dish pan. Let dry, press. If you get excess dye in your rinse water, would probably repeat. Certainly not in a washing machine. This coming from a dedicated prewasher!

I read on a fabric site (can't remember which one) to never pre wash a jelly roll. I never do. So far no problems. Good ole color catchers

I had a Moda red bleed.
Another member of this board has also had Moda reds bleed. |
NO! No! Never! They will shrink and fray and you will never get them straightened out! froggyintexas
