Any information on a Singer model 12?
Well, I said I didn't need any more vintage machines..... and I don't. But I saw a Singer at an auction in really bad shape so I bought it. It's rusty, dirty, we had a hard time figuring out the serial # but think it is 4215188. The numbers 27918 are farther to the right. Like I said, it's is bad shape so I'm not sure it is salvageable.... I'll take a picture a little later. I just thought a fiddle base with mother-of-pearl spots would be sort of pretty if I can ever clean it up..... some spots are missing.

Can't help you but congrats on your new machine. Got pictures?:) Even rusty and dirty I know I would like to see it.
I don't know if anyone has attempted to replace the MOP on a machine before. My understanding is the original process was to imbed it in the japanning while it was still wet then sand everything flat. I think replacing it could be done with care. You might get reasonable results by shaping the mother of pearl carefully to fit the hole then gluing it in with black epoxy to fill any gaps. There is also a black superglue available that may work. This machine will clean up nice but you will have to repair the finish in areas. I hope it has a shuttle and bobbin. This will have a boat shuttle. The Singer site will have a manual for it. I have two and they sew great but a little loud. Threading the bobbin is so different and the setting of the needle can be a problem but once you learn it is a snap. The shuttle and bobbin can be found but not cheap. Jean you can PM me if you need help or we can go email if you like.
Skip PS It takes a Boye 23 needle or a 12X1 |

Well, Glenn says I need to find a shuttle, bobbin and some needles before I get too far on this one. And, I don't have all my tools up here at the cabin so I'll probably get started on it once I get back to civilization in October.
So, does anyone know where I can find a bobbin, shuttle and needles (12x1) for the model 12? I'm going to go look on eBay but I thought you all might know someone that has some or perhaps a website. I checked sew-classic and the model 12 isn't listed.... too old I suspect. |
what a project. enjoy. it does look like it will clean up nicely with alot of elbow grease!

It is definitely a big project but will be worth it once it's clean an up and running. Nice machine.

It would have followed me home too. Nice machine, I would love to see when you are finished.

I think it's going to be really pretty when cleaned up. I really like that curved base.
