Ever hate something you made????
 

I just made this scrappy Christmas log cabin throw size top, and I hate it. Blah! I am not going to finish this one. What a waste of time. I think I am tired of the fabrics that I have been using over and over again. It was fun making the blocks, but after putting them all together, YUCK! It looks terrible!

Your quilt doesn't have anyplace for the eye to rest. So many of your fabrics are the same value so it is hard to see the log cabin. You should finish it -- you can always use it as a car quilt or a picnic quilt. We do learn from every quilt we make.

I don't think your quilt is hateful. Maybe not now, but when you have the time, I would take the blocks apart and put a solid color sashing between them. I think that would be easier for your eyes to glide across the quilt.

I agree with the sashing idea. I would go with white, and make the width half the size of one log. Having said that, however, you could always finish it and use it in the car around the holidays, or put it under the tree and hide it with lots of presents!

I think if you replaced the blocks with the bright white in them you might be happier with the overall look--the white is just too much contrast with no organized pattern. The suggestion of sashing, perhaps solid red or green would help tone it down a little too. But I agree you should finish it, even it is used as a utility quilt in the car. But we all have those quilts that looked better in our minds while planning them, and the actual delivery just didn't measure up. Chalk it up to practice and learning!

i think sashing would help and im sure some homeless person would love it

Please don't take this the wrong way - your quilt looks like one of mine before my daughters tell me a better way to arrange it. I was watching one of the Simply Quilts shows and a lady on it was making a scrappy quilt. She put the pieces into a paper bag and sewed the ones together as she pulled them out of the bag. Her quilt looked great! So I said to myself, I can do that! So I tried it. And my quilt just looked so bad, it did end up in the donation box. My daughters can take a bunch of flowers and put them in a vase and it looks like a beautiful arrangement. I take the same flowers and it looks like I just shoved them in the vase. So I have come to the conclusion I need help with laying out my quilt and various other artistic attempts.

There is so much I like about your quilt, I would take the blocks apart, rearrange them and I was willing to bet you will have a very attractive quilt.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think taking the blue and white ones out would make it better. But I don't want to mess with it any more. I would like to just get rid of it. Any takers?

I love everyone's comments. Your comments are one of the reasons I have been very afraid to make scrappy quilts. I would hate to make a quilt that I just hated. That being said..... I think there is hope for your quilt. I would start first by grouping the ones like ones together and then sprinkle those in specific spots. I agree with the ideas about sashing, but almost think do it around the 4 log groupings so that you have sets. Or better yet. If you have artsy people you know, get them to come look at it and rearrange it. That's what I do when I get frustrated. I am so lucky that my husband has a great eye for that sort of thing.

With quilting, every quilt is a learning experience - some good and some bad.

Edited to add: Think outside the box. Use a color for the sashings that won't blend into any block. Go through stash if you have one and pick out some things. Put the blocks on top of them with a little of the sashing showing and take a picture. One quilt that I made that was blah was pinks and oranges and some bright blues. I added a heavy on the black with white print to it and punched it out. Don't be afraid to try anything. It just might work.

I made a doll quilt this past spring that I just ended up not liking at all--and decided that the biggest issue I had was what you're talking about--tired of the fabrics, and actually I didn't like every single fabric I chose. I was only trying to use up scraps, which I learned is NOT a positive thing if I don't like the scraps to start with.

In looking closely at some of your fabrics, I'm seeing some that have shapes within that ==when assembled with others--appear to be running (the red one) instead of straight on the side. I also think the blue and white blocks are throwing things off.

If you are tired of the fabrics, you might not even want to mess with taking the thing apart. I wouldn't. I might keep it in the trunk of the car for an emergency or protecting things being hauled if necessary. I'm not saying I don't think it CAN be reworked but it sounds like you don't WANT to invest the time???
