Tie quilt

Hello, how can I wash old ties without having all the color bleed out? I have some old ones, that when soaked, ran badly. I intend to make a quilt from them, but need to know if there's a way to "set" the colors in the tile.

I always wash/dry the silk ties I use, you didn't mention what kind of ties you are using. I've never had one bleed. If I have a fabric that bleeds I wash it over until it no longer bleeds or don't use it if it continues for more than 2 or 3 washes.

Many, many years ago, when madras was popular, we used heavily salted water to set the colors. I have also read to use white vinegar along with the salt.

I have made a tie quilt and your best bet is not to use the ones that ran. Ties have been made out of everything from silk, linen, wool, polyester, rayon. On the other hand, my tie quilt is a hanger, not a utility quilt.
