Assistance with Buggy Barn star pattern

I don't know if this is the place to post this or not. If it isn't please tell me where I should post it. I am making the Buggy Barn Star quilt. If you haven't made one of these you take 5 fat quarters, one green, red, blue, gold and cream and stack them. Then trace the star pattern onto freezer paper followed by ironing the freezer paper onto the top fat quarter. Instead of having 5 random fat quarters that will eventually have the backgrounds and the stars mixed up. I would like to have one color for the background behind the star & different fabrics for the star. Can anyone tell me how I would accomplish this? Grateful for any info. :)

It can be done, however you would loose the ease of cutting that goes with the buggy barn patterns. If I were to do that, I myself would cut the entire thing as templates then cut maybe four layers of fabric.

If you are looking to use only two fabrics ... have you thought about cutting 10" squares out of two fabrics then have one star the reverse of the other? You would still have only two fabrics but the cutting and assembly would be much easier - imho.

If you wanted to follow the pattern, you would need a stack of 5 colors AND a stack of 5 neutrals. You would wind up with 2 sets of stars. One set with color stars on neutral backgrounds, and one set (for your next quilt) with neutral stars on color backgrounds.
