Red Eye for decoration only?
 

I have an opportunity to buy a Singer Red Eye today for $10. The guy says it's non working, just used as decor or staging in his home. I'm wondering if there will be a way make it useable? I have no real experience with these oldies. Is it worth it just for decoration? They look cool but they're heavy, right?

For $10.00, I would definitely take it. Maybe it's non-working because he doesn't know how to work it. And yes it's still worth if for decoration but I'd give it a shot. Many expert vintage users on the board to help you out. I'm not one of them though!

If for decor only, it may be missing power cord/foot pedal?? bobbin case? feet/bobbins/manual. now none of that is a huge big deal but will cost another $50 or so to equip and then most likely will need cleaned/oiled/timed or at least checked out. so you would have a maximum of $110 in it worst-case scenario. But you could luck out too and the machine might fire up just fine and need just a little oil. Let us know what you decide but if this one is cosmetically pristine, i'd buy it for that $10 and then figure out what to do later! if a dawg, then no.

I'd jump on it for that price as well. I paid $50 for mine and am having her serviced for additional $$. Also need a bobbin cover plate but will fill a hole in my tiny 'collection' and will be usable to boot.

I'd take it for $10. It's a Singer 66. It takes standard needles and (of all things) class 66 bobbins that are available pretty much everywhere. They're a horizontal drop in bobbin setup. No separate bobbin case to be easily lost.
Singer 66s make very nice piecing machines. They're also pretty sturdy. In most cases it won't take much more than a little oil and patience to get them to sew if they've been sitting a long time.

My Red Eye cost $40 and there is no bobbin case or cover. Sure is pretty though.

My Red Eye was free, its a really nice machine. It sews so quietly and smoothly.

I would definitely grab it for $10. I paid $50 for mine because I think they are so pretty.
