Hi I'm new here, but have been quilting for many years and I'm glad I found this forum. I have recently started to learn hand embroidery and wanted to incorporate quilting and hand embroidery. I came across these types of quilts that I wanted to try, but I'm not sure how it is put together. The "scrap" pieces- are the edges finished first? and then hand stitched onto the block? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance |
it looks as if the edges are turned under

http://frayedroundtheedges.blogspot.co.uk/ Karen Ives website explains it all. I must say I'm glad you brought this to our attention. Atleast to mine. I've never seen this before. And am adding her website to my favorites.

Welcome to the board. I'm sure many will chime in and see if they can help with your questions.
It's hard to tell from a picture exactly how they put this together but some of the patches appear to be stitched over the base quilt. That blue piece even seems to be frayed on one edge so at least that piece is not turned under. Is this a wall hanging? I would want all my edges turned under so it could be washed at some point. It's almost crazy quilt-like. The hand stitches are lovely. If you know where you found this there might be a pattern or at least an explanation about how it was made. I hope you find out. It would be a fun project to work on. |
This is new to me too and I will be trying that as well. Thanks for introducing us to yet another thing to do and welcome to the board. It is the best but also addictive. LOL

Hello all....such a nice welcome :). I'm happy you found this as interesting as I did. I was practicing hand embroidery and thought I'd include my pieces in a crazy quilt patch. As I was browsing the web I came across these interesting blocks that I couldn't resist! As most quilters, I have so many bits and pieces of fabric, I thought it would be a great way to make a full size bed quilt. My hand embroidery is novice, but coming along. I did go to the "frayed around the edges" blog, but didn't see any specifics on construction. As a quilter, I'm use to specific directions, so this is new to me. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks again.
This is one of my patches- excuse the embroidery.....I'm a novice :)http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...pszxxlnw5i.jpg |

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. It does look like her edges are turned under and then top stitched but your block is lovely included in patchwork!
