Let's talk cases, cleaning and repair

my new baby...filthy. I love the rust and creme though and would rather clean it than strip it.
And there are so many ways to trash something inadvertently. The clips seem sturdy, just stiff from rust but I don't see a way to get them off other than prying. How to clean and with what while attached to the case? Suggestions and advice Please? Thanks, I so appreciate and value the members here. (I could have stuck this in a general thread but couldn't bring up anything in a search myself so hoped this will help someone else searching) |
try Glenn's #1 cleaner

Steve,
I've heard of Glenn's #1 cleaner, but can't remember where. You gotta linkie poo to it? Joe |
I agree with Joe. when I did a search.... there are 500+ hits.
I really am curious about the hinges. do you just pry them up? how do you reattach? will the holes be ok? |

here is a before and after cleaning a 50 year old plastic car part |
I would want to restore that one too. It's a great looking case.

I would try Murphy's oil soap and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. So you can wipe it dry with a thick towel/rag as you go. Try it in an inconspicuous spot or a bit of Woolite
|
Leave the hinges in the case you can easily clean around them with a QTip.

the closest thing to Glenn's #1 I can find is in Steve's thread here
http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...y-t259595.html but no actual recipe I have what I 'think' is a magic eraser but it did squat. Should it be wet? |

And yes the magic eraser should be wet |
