Question about fusible batting

I just got some fusible dream batting and am starting with placemats. Do you fuse the back or front fabric? And do you cut fusible larger than pieced top. Really want to learn more about fusible batting and am looking forward to your help. Thanks and happy quilting:o:sew::sew:

I've only used fusible batting when I was teaching quilting and making pot holders. I fused it to the backing so that the student would not have to have a Walking Foot.

I am not familiar with that brand. I use Hobbs 80/20 fusible and you can fuse it with a dry iron but reposition if needed. I make the sandwich and fuse the front, I then flip over the sandwich and fuse the back. I want the back fused last because it is what I can't see when quilting and I make sure it has no wrinkles.

Both sides. Press & lift from the center out-no "ironing". You can lift & reposition if you get a crease. I like it a lot for small projects like baby or crib quilts. I've only use Hobbes. I think it would be unweildy for big projects.
