machine quilting with silk thread
 

Has anyone ever machine quilted with silk thread top and cotton in the bobbin? What should I look out for? I want to use my walking foot. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, Dianne Gaudnyski is big on silk quilting. You should look at her website for tips. I used silk on a couple of quilts. It's a fine thread so it's not seen boldly. Used a fine needle. Size 65 or 70. I was doing free motion quilting.

I also was doing fmq so did not use walking foot my dsm I have not tried it on my longarm yet but want to. It is actually the thread that I used for a long time it seemed to give me courage to try more designs because it is so forgiving.

I have not used silk but I have used Invisifil which is a 90 wt polyester that behaves much like silk. I used a heavier weight poly in a prewound bobbin. Like Newbee and Sewingitalltogether, I used it FMQ. My use was in a longarm not domestic. It sinks right down into the fabric and tends to mimic the fabric color. Great thread to use for tight fills or where you will have loads of backtracking as the buildup is not as obvious. Can't think of any pitfalls, other than the price tag.

Thanks to each of you for responding. I appreciate the feedback as you each gave me something to think about. And, should I really practice with FMQ again. Just so frustrating for me. But using "forgiving" or "invisifil" might make me happier with the results. More testing, trial and error. I need patience! Thanks again.

I have only used Silk thread for applique. Not sure since it is a thinner thread if it is going to wear with many washing.
