Christmas
I've purchased the Tole Christmas layer cake by Moda. I'm looking for suggestions for a traditional Christmas quilt to make with it. It's for my DDIL so it needs to be really nice! Just like her! I'd like a pattern that shows off the variety of materials without cutting them into tiny pieces.

How about the pattern that looks like gift boxes with a bow on top? I think MSQC has a tutorial on it?

I love that pattern but I think she wants something less cute and more traditional. Thanks, Tartan!

How about the Disappearing Hourglass from Missouri Star Quilt Co. I was looking at it myself and I may try it with a layer cake I have. Just a word of warning, if you use all of the 42 squares, you will have a HUGH quilt. I just made the disappearing pinwheel 5 quilt and ended up using only 30 of the squares and it still came out (with a 2" and a 4" border) to 88 x 69. But I think it would showcase the fabric.

I found an adorable -- and easy -- quilt pattern online yesterday. I've never purchased a layer cake but I plan to do so for this one. It's called the 1=2+Easy Quilt Pattern (tutorial) ! It's on a blog called Samelia's mum. This is the link:
http://sameliasmum.com/2011/05/1-2-e...-tutorial.html Am I correct in assuming that in a layer cake there are duplicates of each print? If so, I plan on using one of each of the prints I want as the center blocks. And then the rest of them can be used as they are. Only one fabric of yardagge to purchase (or take from stash). Note: I tried using the link and it didn't work, so I'll try to just google the quilt name. Sorry about this. YES! AS soon as I typed Samelias mum in Google, it came right up |

How about the Variable Star, also called the Sawtooth star. You can do it with the center and the points matching or with them contrasting.

I found a tutorial from msqc on the big star quilt and really like it. I wish I could get written directions for it. Any help?

MSQC has a great tutorial using a layer cake. I made a quilt using these instructions and love it. It is called "Double Slice Layer Cake".
