Variegated thread usage
When quilting with variegated thread, do you use the same thread in the bobbin as well, or a solid?
|
I use a solid thread that blends in with the backing
|
I depends on whether I will use the back a lot. For reversible placemats, I use the same variegated thread in the bobbin. For quilts that will really only be seen from the front, I use a blending bobbin thread.

I just quilted a quilt today with verigated thread and I used a solid color for the back. I usually use a solid for the back if it's a print and a verigated on the back if the fabric is solid. Also depends on how much verigated thread I have.

I quilted most of a quilt with variegated in the bobbin and top thread. When I got to the border, it looked like I might run out so I switched to a solid that matched the back to finish.

Never even occurred to me until just now that variegated in top & bobbin will almost never match up so there's no need to use the same thread in both. Obviously, that means that I've only used the same variegated in top & bobbin. So far it's turned out nicely. I'm about to quilt another quilt with Bari variegated by Aurifil. Guess I'll have to pay more attention to how it turns out.

I use variegated in the bobbin as otherwise I tend to get thread breakage on top :(
|
I usually use whatever looks best on the backing. Has to be the same weight.
|
My only caution would be to be sure you use the same "weight" of thread in the bobbin. Different weights can cause some machines to skip stitches and act up in other ways....for that reason i always just use the variegated in top and bottom.

Congrats on the birth of your newest Grandson, in answer to your query about the thread, I use plain in the bobbin.
