Minky rag quilt
 

I have some beautiful Minky fabric to make a rag quilt for my daughter-law. This is my first attempt to use Minky fabric. I am going to use 12" squares four across and 8 up so it will be a small throw. Should I skip batting? I plan to use fabric spray to held the pieces together when I sew the X. Any suggestions?

Minkie doesn't fray like fabrics used for raggy quilts, the edges will be kind of rough, you might want to just make a patchwork quilt, with your edges enclosed. As for the batting its a personal choice-- some people do use a batting, others choose not to.

Minkee isn't suitable for rag quilts as it doesn't fray. I would save it for a backing. You can use batting or not, depending on how warm you want the quilt to be.

I realize that Minky will not "rag" but it will curl. I saw a breast cancer patient with one in a treatment room and really liked the look. Will 12" squares be too large to work with? Any hints for keeping the fabric from slinking while I am sewing?

I use the 505 basting spray when I have used minky as the backing on a quilt, it really held it nicely while I quilted.

I use a walking foot when sewing minky blocks, sure helps keep it in line.

I did a baby rag quilt using minkee for one side, flannel for the other, no batting. I used the pre-cut 5" minkee squares, so didn't need to sew an X, but it came out really cute. If I were going to use larger squares, I would probly do as others suggested, use spray basting or elmers to hold together, and a walking foot. At the time I made mine, I didn't even have or know what a walking foot was, have one now with my newer machine though!

As others have stated, Minkee will not shag and curl like flannel does. Be sure to use a walking foot.

Minky wont work for a "Rag" quilt. You will not get the "Rag", with Minky. I doesn't fray like cotton. I've used Minky in "Scrap" quilts and on the back of quilts. And Minky makes a great throw sized quilts, just not a rag quilt. Sorry

Are you only using Minky? I use it all the item for rag quilts while it does not rag it curls and is still cute. Most the time I use one layer Minky and two layers of flannel. You need a wider seam about half inch from the edge and you need to use a ball or stretch needle. I have good luck using 9 in squares without spray basting. If both top and backing are minky use one layer of flannel in the middle it will hold them together and minimize the slide while you sew. I do each square with an X in the middle to stabilize them. Also lengthen your stitch to about 4 to 4.5 in length.
