Newbie Quilter

Hi Everyone, I'm brand new to quilting. I own an old singer (got it 40 years ago!) and have been sewing now and again over the years but would love to give quilting a try. I want to buy a new machine and have been looking at the Janome Skyline S5. I was offered one today for $900 or an Elna Excellence 680 for the same price. Does this seem about right, I see the mrp is $1500. Also, I had never heard of Elna until today but understand the Swiss company was taken over by Janome and it is just the cover of the machines that differ. Can anyone offer me any advice? I'm from across the pond hence why I'm asking if the price i was quoted seems reasonable. Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't help you there. I don't have experience with either of those machines and I'm in Canada so pricing is probably off.

But I can tell you that I've been really happy with my Janome machine. I broke down and purchased a Horizon 7700 a few years ago and adore it.

Welcome back. can't help with price. I have a Janome mc 10001 it is older now, I purchased it in 1996. Never had any trouble with it. The only thing is the computer machines get outdated,as this is a embroidery machine too. I really enjoy doing embroidery too, sometimes I get sad because mine is getting older. It's a great machine,I don't know what I would buy. I can tell you that Janome has been a good machine.

I would buy the Janome that sells for $300,it does basic stitches. nothing fancy but it is a work horse and if you don't like quilting (tears) you won't be out a lot of money. All you need is a straight seam and that is why many use a Brother or a Featherweight. Welcome and good luck. Glad to have you here. Feel free to ask and ask, lots of sweet ladies & men here

Thanks for sharing this info. My gut instinct is to go with a Jenome so I will have another look at their website.
