Opinions on Rag Quilt
Someone is wanting me to make them a quilt out of Real Tree fabric. She likes the rag look but my fabric is cotton, not flannel. What do you think of making one with the cotton? If anyone has made a cotton rag quilt would you mind posting a pic? I know it wont rag as well as flannel but what is your opinion of just cotton. I may just have to rethink this and do a pattern that will show the prints.
TIA Oh, see wants it to be Queen size too |
The problem with cotton is that it won't curl as nicely as flannel does. Just let her know that fact.

Cotton>Flannel>Muslin. Been washed I don't know how many times. It was machine embroidered. I don't like the feel of flannel so I use cotton Planning on another one which I will FMQ, and a king size just to use up scraps. King bed needs a spread. |
I did a couple with cotton but they were gifts so I don't have them. I had washed them before giving and thought they ragged pretty well.

My avatar is a rag quilt made with cotton..

You can also make it from fleece, instead of the fraying it'll curl. Its a great option, especially for little kids..

You could put flannel layer in the middle, and the back.

I've made lots of raggy quilts, I often use a mixture of regular cottons, flannels, corduroy, Denim.... They all work. I sometimes add a layer of inexpensive cotton muslin to the regular cotton blocks-- the muslin seems to add just enough to get the raggy edges nice like flannels. I also use cotton batting in my raggy quilts. Clip closer & shorter than with heavier ( flannel, Denim) so your edges will be like a nice chiennelle.
