A real word challenge...
 

A member here, "luvstoquilt" posted something about the public's connotation of our term "scrappy" quilts as somehow not value able, or cheap because it is made of scraps. Making a scrappy quilt is much harder for some of us to do, because our OCD tendencies get in the way, and just because it is scraps,does not mean it was not just as expensive to make as controlled quilts, so I challenge all of you to come up with a term to use instead of "scrappy" that describes the quilt, and makes it sound valuable or exotic.

DH suggested "mosaic quilt".

I don't understand why words needs to be changed. I am noticing that members are misspelling the word BORDER as BOARDER. Maybe I am too old to change. Quilts that are made from our valuable scraps that we refuse to toss are usually masterpieces. I find it a big challenge to make scrappy quilts too and I admired the ones who are very skillful at making their scrappy quilts. To me, the word scrappy means using many fabrics. Thanks for posting this interesting discussion. It will be interesting to see what others think.

I agree 110% with maniacquilter! That's the prob today.....we over-analyze the words not the meaning of ........or we give words meanings that they originally did not have! Viva la scrappy!

I understand exactly what you're saying. Oh, you made that from scraps. You didn't have to buy the fabric. Well, I did have to buy that fabric. I just used every single little piece of that fabric I bought. I also find it difficult to use all the different fabrics but I like what I have been able to do.

Well you can use a like of forty matching fabrics and I would still consider it scrappy because it has a lot of different fabrics. I think the term is up to who ever is interpreting it. I don't think anyone would deem it less valuable. Look how much a crazy quilt can go for and it is essentially scrappy. Fabric is pricey no matter how you use it. Value is in the eye of the beholder

There is a big difference between a scrap quilt and a scrappy quilt. Patchwork is the word I use around non quilters who can get on my nerves.

I do like mosaic, even though I really love making scrappy quilts. And I usually don't pay for my fabrics. Most of them are free. Other people don't realize the value of their leftovers and they are headed for the trash bin. So I rescue them or are given them. What I buy are neutrals and blenders to bring all those scraps together.

Those misspellings bother me also. Like there and their, to and too and two, here and hear, bear and bare; there are lots more. Too many people don't really know the difference. And as a teacher, I just want to reach for my red pencil. LOL:D

Mademkelly I love your dH's idea of confetti quilt but expect it won't ever change. I am a totally devoted fan of30's quilts and make them often. I just feel my scrap bin is made up of fabric from $10 to $14 a yard and to me that is a sad thing to call scraps. Remind me of " some people's trash is someone else's treasures!".
