We have a friend who is retiring from our local fire dept after 33 years. He has asked me if I can incorporate the small wall quilt (see attached) into a quilt. The wall quilt was quilted with very little batting (I think she may have used flannel). Can this be done? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If the wall hanging is light enough can you use it as an applique?

I would just applique it to a background quilt. It would stand out a bit but it would just look like trapunto. You might need to quilt a few lines in it to prevent it from wrinkling or sagging but I would just use invisible thread and follow a bit of the original quilting. Great piece and it would benefit from being made into a more useable item in my opinion.

What size do they want in the finished quilt?? How about appliqueing the quilt onto a larger piece of fleece?? Maybe you can find some fireman print on the fleece otherwise I would use red.

I agree with the others. Because of the irregular shape (with cut-outs), applique is the best option. Once you get it on a regular shaped background, you could always treat it as a QAYG and add more piecing around that.
