wrinkles
 

i recently untied the ribbon on a stack of fat quarters and found the pieces to be incredibly creased, the folds are distinct. any ideas how to get them flat and smooth again? i am thinking when quilt is finished i will be quilting the heck out of it so the crease marks won't show.

I have lingerie bags (3). I prewash all pieces of fabric after purchasing, mainly to eliminate any bleeding and preshrinking. Would rather get all kinks and quirks out of the way in the beginning. Those bags are absolutely worth it. I bought the better ones for about $3.00 a piece.

I press with a good shot of a sizing or starch. I always press my fabric just before cutting it since it gets creases while stored. I really love Magic Sizing brand, but I use regular spray starch if I will be doing anything with bias edges like triangles.

I recently purchased an item called Flatter and that has really helped me out in these types of situations.. I have never prewashed a jelly roll. I don't know why its called "soak" as I just spray it on my fabric as I would starch

I use a spritzer bottle of water with a little vinegar in it. The vinegar is an old trick I learned from my Grandmother.

But by the time it was put together & quilted no creases! It was batiks, so I wondered if that made the creases more severe. Glad I didn't give up on it.

Sometimes batiks can still have residual wax left over in the fabric - in addition to the sizing - especially chops like those pictured. This can make them stiffer and definitely have more creases. Ironing on plain newspaper can help get the wax out - or washing with baking soda or worse case boiling in baking soda.

I usually press the blocks as it is pieced and give it a little more starch and steam if there is a wrinkle or a fold mark.

I have some fabrics that I simply can't get creases out of. I ususally just starch them like crazy and live with it.
