Fabric Dyers: Best place to buy PFD fabric?

I really want to try hand dyeing some fabric, but I don't want to spend a fortune. Where is the best place to buy quality PDF at a good price? Any good sources online, or would Joanns and/or Hancocks have it?

I found PFD once at JoAnn's. Other than that one time I haven't seen it there (although I don't often look). Have you checked Dharma Trading Company online? They have lots of dying supplies and information. http://www.dharmatrading.com/

Honestly, I bought Kona PFD at my LQS and it was dirt cheap there -- like $4.95/yard (plus, my LQS gives me $1 off because I bought my machine from them). Depending on how much you need, this might be one of the rare instances where I would recommend buying it from LQS. I've never seen PFD at local JAF. They sell a 20yd bolt online, but I'd probably try a smaller amount first to make sure you like dying.

Softexpressions carries it: http://www.softexpressions.com/Merch...egory_Code=0FP

They show it in 1/2 yards but I have seen it on bolts in their store, so you might call them.

I use bleached muslin from JAF all the time for dying. You should wash it first but half the time I don't and it works just fine. I use procion type fiber relative dyes with soda ash fixer.

Thanks for all the replies! I will try my LQS and see what they have. I haven't looked at Soft Expressions or Dharma yet, but thank you so much for the links... I will check them out.

Where do you buy your dyes from? I saw soda ash at Walmart, but I am curious about the dyes.

I purchase most of mine from Dharma trading company and from fabric.com.

I buy from Dharma trading online. You can also get PFD fabric there but I usually don't. Dharma Trading is a good company to deal with. I mostly buy the soda ash at pool supply places (including places like Walmart). It is sodium carbonate, sold to raise the pH of the pool. Dharma carries it but I don't care to pay for shipping it as it is heavy.

I googled "prepared for dyeing cotton fabric" and got these among other sources:

http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/...d-45-inch.html Also source for dyes, tools, etc.

https://www.softexpressions.com/soft...abrics/PDF.php 2 fabrics here, one of which is what Hoffman uses for their batiks

https://www.softexpressions.com/soft...abrics/PDF.php Here it is organic in several formats at 2-3x the price.
